Important New Ethics Training
Requirement for Candidates for
Elected Judicial Office
The Administrative Board of the
Courts recently amended the Rules
Governing Judicial Conduct to
establish mandatory judicial ethics
training for all candidates in
judicial elections except those
seeking election as town and village
justices.
The court system's Judicial Campaign
Ethics Center (http://www.nycourts.gov/ip/jcec/)
is responsible for developing and
implementing this mandatory training
program. The Center will
provide several options to
candidates, including live training
at the Judicial Institute in White
Plains on July 28, 2006, and
September 19, 2006. There will
be simulcasts of these programs at
locations throughout the state, and
options for candidates who cannot
attend either the live or simulcast
presentations. Each candidate
must complete the campaign ethics
training requirement within thirty
days after receiving the judicial
nomination or ninety days prior to
receiving the nominations. 22
NYCRR 110.5(A)(4)(f). For more
information, including specific
details about the location and
timing of the live and simulcast
programs, candidates may contact the
Judicial Campaign Ethics Center by
phone at 1-888-600-5232 or by e-mail
at
contactjcec@courts.state.ny.us
and check the Center's website for
the latest news and updates.
