Volunteer Lawyers Needed to Assist Senior Citizens with

Health Care Directives

The Onondaga County Bar Association’s Volunteer Lawyers Project and Legal Services of Central New York, Inc., are gearing up for their fourth annual Decision Making Day activities. This annual event initiated by the New York State Bar Association in 1999, stresses the importance of health care directives in taking control of the medical decisions on one’s behalf, should one be unable to physically make decisions due to injury or illness.

Teams of volunteer attorneys will disperse to various senior centers and senior housing complexes during the first week in May to education senior citizens on the need for health care proxies and living wills and then return the following week to execute the documents for those who wish to do so. Last year 48 volunteers met with nearly 300 senior citizens in 22 facilities around Onondaga County.

Attorneys interested in participating, please call (471-2667) or e-mail (bromeo@onbar.org) Barbara at the Bar Association.

NOTE:  Attend the CLE on April 25, 2002, "From the Lawyers Office to the Emergency Room:  Legal and Medical Concerns with Advanced Directives," and earn 2 CLE credits free if you are a Decision Making Day volunteer.  There will be a small fee of $15.00 for a light supper.
