CLE | Examination of two NEW sets of Uniform Rules Regarding Practice in the Fourth Department

      This exciting CLE is open to all attorneys and support staff and will cover the following:

  • Electronic Filing Rules of the Appellate Division – which were effective March 1, 2018; and
  • Practice Rules of the Appellate Division – scheduled to be effective September 15, 2018.

Panelists include:

Hon. Mark W. Bennett Before his appointment to his current position as Cerlk of the Appellate Division, Fourth Department, Judge Bennett previously served the Court as a two-year Court Attorney, Deputy Chief Appellate Court Attorney, Confidential Clerk to the Hon. StephenK. Lindley, and finally Chief Appellate Court Attorney. Earlier in his career, he has worked as an associate in the antitrust practice group in both the Washington, DC and New York office of Nixon Peabody. He is a graduate of St. Lawrence University, where he spent his senior year abroad as an exchange student in Soviet Moscow, and received his law degree from Georgetown University, from which he also received a master’s degree in international affairs.

 

John A. Cirando, of D. J. and J.A. Cirando, Esqs., is widely recognized as one of New York’s preeminent appellate lawyers. A former Onondaga County Chief Assistant District Attorney and Army Captain, Mr. Cirando’s extensive appellate experience includes regular appearances before all appellate courts in New York, both state and federal. He serves, by appointment, on the New York State Law Revision Commission, the Governor’s Judicial Screening Committee, the Commission on Judicial Nomination, and as a Trustee on the Interest on Lawyer Account Board. Mr. Cirando lectures on a variety of topics and has taught appellate advocacy at Syracuse University College of Law. He is a 1963 graduate of St. Bonaventure University; a 1966 graduate of State University of New York at Buffalo, College of Law and was admitted to practice law in the 4th Judicial Department on December 7, 1966.

Alan J. Pierce, Esq., of Hancock Estabrook, LLP, is a partner in the firm’s Litigation practice and leads its Appellate Practice area. Additionally, Mr. Pierce practices in the following areas: Alternative Dispute Resolution, Commercial Litigation, Insurance Litigation, and Products Liability Litigation. From 2008 to 2018, he has been selected among The Best Lawyers in America and, in Syracuse, was recognized with the Lawyer of the Year designation, in 2016, for his work centering around Insurance Law. Attorney Pierce is a 1981 graduate, summa cum laude, of St. Lawrence University and received his juris doctor degree, summa cum laude, from the Syracuse University College of Law, as a member of the Class of 1984.
