Presenters:

Hon. John V. Centra began his legal career in 1984 upon his graduation from Ohio Northern Law School. He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Onondaga County in the federal trial and DWI units and, in 1988, began a 10-year career as Town Justice in DeWitt. He enjoyed many years in private practice with Carni, Centra & Rose (1989-91); Primo, Primo & Centra (1992-97); and Primo, Primo, Centra & Kirwan, LLP (1998-99). He was appointed in 1999 to the NYS Supreme Court in Onondaga County, by then Gov. George Pataki. In 2000, he began an elected term to that office.

 

Janet D. Callahan, Esq. is the Managing Partner of Hancock Estabrook, LLP. Elected to the position in 2010, she previously led the firm’s Litigation and Appellate Practices area while also serving, for eight years, as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Ms. Callahan is the first female Managing Partner in the firm’s 125-year history. Now, she heads the Executive Committee and oversees the firm’s business operations and manages 60 attorneys and 130 employees. Under her leadership, the firm opened offices in Albany (2011) and Ithaca (2015). She is listed as a 2018 “Lawyer of the Year – Syracuse” by the Best Lawyers in America in the Appellate Practice and Product Liability Litigation – Defendants areas.

 

John A. Cirando, Esq. is widely regarded as one of New York State’s preeminent appellate practitioners who has appeared before all state and federal appellate courts. He serves, by appointment, on the New York State Law Revision Commission, the Commission on Judicial Nomination, New York State Interest on Lawyer Account Fund and the Governor’s Judicial Screening Committee. He received the 2013 Distinguished Lawyer Award from the Onondaga County Bar Association. He serves numerous civic and non-profit organizations as board member or general counsel. Mr. Cirando lectures on a variety of topics and has taught appellate advocacy at Syracuse University College of Law.
